Deck & Fence Staining in Des Moines & Central Iowa

Wood restoration that actually lasts. Proper prep, the right stain for your wood, and application done right the first time.

Deck and fence work looks straightforward until you’ve watched a stain job fail six months in. The wrong product on the wrong wood, applied at the wrong time of year, in the wrong weather, those are the four ways every stain project goes sideways. Our approach is simple: we look at your wood, understand the current condition, help you pick the right stain type, and apply it at the right time under the right conditions. Every deck and fence project is led by a CIP Certified painter trained on wood restoration specifically.

Which Stain Is Right for Your Wood?

The type of stain you choose affects appearance, longevity, and future maintenance. Here’s a quick primer, during your estimate we’ll recommend a specific product for your project.

  • Transparent Stains: Show off the natural grain of the wood. Best for newer, higher-grade wood you want to preserve as-is. Shortest maintenance cycle, typically re-coat every one to three years.
  • Semi-Transparent Stains: Add color while still showing wood grain. A good middle ground for decks and fences that need some UV protection but shouldn’t look painted. Re-coat every two to four years.
  • Solid Stains: Fully opaque, closer to paint in appearance but designed for horizontal and outdoor wood surfaces. Best for older decks and fences where you want a uniform color and maximum protection. Longest maintenance cycle.

Iowa Weather & Staining Windows

Wood needs to be dry before it’s stained, and the stain needs time to cure before rain hits it. In Central Iowa, that generally means we schedule deck and fence work between late spring and early fall, keeping a close eye on the forecast. If your wood is freshly cleaned, or freshly installed pressure-treated lumber, we may recommend waiting for the wood to dry properly before applying stain, rushing this step is one of the most common ways a stain job fails.

Deck & Fence FAQs

Should I stain or paint my deck?

In most cases, stain is the right choice for a deck. Paint sits on top of the wood and tends to peel, especially on horizontal surfaces that take foot traffic and standing water. Stain absorbs into the wood, wears more gracefully, and is easier to maintain. Fences are more flexible, both stain and paint work, though we usually recommend stain.

Most residential decks take one to three working days from start to finish, weather permitting. Larger decks, decks that need extensive cleaning, or projects that require a two-coat application can take longer.

Depends on the stain type and sun exposure. Transparent stains typically re-coat every one to three years, semi-transparent every two to four, and solid stains hold up longest. We’ll give you honest expectations during the estimate.

Usually yes. Older greyed wood almost always cleans up beautifully with proper cleaning and light sanding. During the estimate we’ll assess whether the wood is a good candidate or whether a solid stain is a better fit for its condition.

No. Pressure-treated lumber needs to dry out before it can accept stain properly. Depending on the wood, that can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. We’ll advise you on timing during the estimate.

Minor sanding and prep is part of every project. For structural repairs, board replacement, or larger carpentry work, we can either coordinate with a local carpenter or recommend one.
